Pakistan HEC Cambridge Scholarship launched

A new scholarship scheme has just been launched for students from Pakistan who wish to study for a PhD at the University of Cambridge.

The award, named the Pakistan HEC Cambridge Scholarship, is jointly funded by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust. From October 2011 the scheme will offer up to five full-cost scholarships per year to PhD students from Pakistan, at any College in Cambridge, and in any subject except those classed as Clinical.

The Higher Education Commission acts as a facilitator for institutions of higher education in Pakistan, and aims to help HE institutions there to be engines of growth for the socio-economic development of the country. This scholarship programme will help outstanding Pakistani students to acquire a doctorate at the University of Cambridge, before returning to become faculty members involved with teaching and research at a university of their choice in Pakistan.

Dr Sohail Naqvi, Executive Director of the Higher Education Commission, says: "This programme will help our universities to join the ranks of premier institutions of higher learning in the world."

Michael O’Sullivan, Director of CCT, who visited Islamabad in January to confirm the details of the new scholarship, says: "We are delighted to be working with the HEC in Pakistan to make it possible for more doctoral students in all disciplines to work in Cambridge, and thereafter to make a significant contribution to the development of Pakistan."
