CU Commonwealth Society celebrates

The CU Commonwealth Society celebrated another year of activities in Cambridge at its annual dinner, held on 1 March at Hughes Hall.

The assembled group of members and friends of the Society was addressed by Dr Dhananjayan (Danny) Sriskandarajah, Director of the Royal Commonwealth Society.  He is an established researcher, author and commentator on international migration, economic development, the political economy of conflict, and ethnic diversity.

He gave the audience an update on the RCS, and in particular the recent work that has been done to identify the policies and aims of the society in the 21st century.  The RCS is working to promote international understanding across the Commonwealth, particularly amongst young people - their many youth activities include a Cambridgeshire Youth Summit, to be held at St John's College on 17-18 March, at which young people between the ages of 14-17 will take part in interactive workshops on global issues, and role-play in a simulated Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting.

The CU Commonwealth Society is run by a group of current students and locally-based permanent members, and offers a wide programme of events throughout the year.  Membership is open to all who support the aims of the Commonwealth.
