Sir Martin Harris (Chair)

Current position:

President of Clare Hall, Cambridge

Other appointments:

Sir Martin has been Director of the Office for Fair Access since 2004, and was Chancellor of Salford University from 2005 to 2009. He has been a Director of Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) since 1991 and Chairman since 2006.

Sir Martin was Deputy Chairman of the North West Development Agency from 2003 until 2008, Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester from 1992 to 2004, and Vice Chancellor of the University of Essex from 1987 to 1992. He served as Chairman of the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals (now UUK) from 1997 to 1999, and has chaired a number of national reviews, in particular in the fields of modern languages, careers services and postgraduate education. He chaired the Clinical Standards Advisory Group from 1996 to 1999 and was a Commissioner for Health Improvement from 1999 to 2002.

He is an Honorary Fellow of Queens’ College, Cambridge and has been awarded honorary doctorates by the Universities of Essex, Salford, Manchester Metropolitan University, Lincoln, Plymouth, Queen’s University Belfast, Exeter, University of Ulster, UMIST, and the University of Manchester.

Mrs Sarah Squire (Deputy Chair)

Current position:

President of Hughes Hall, Cambridge

Sarah Squire has been President of Hughes Hall since 2006. She read History at Cambridge and then entered HM Diplomatic Service. Her work as a diplomat took her to Israel, Washington, Senegal, Macedonia and Croatia. From 2000-2003 she was HM Ambassador in Estonia. Her focus from 1995-2006 was on the countries of eastern Europe and former Yugoslavia.

She is a member of the Advisory Board of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at University College, London.

In addition to her responsibilities for Hughes Hall, Sarah Squire has a number of University duties. She has been a Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University since October 2008 and is also Chairman of the Management Committee of the Centre for Family Research, a Syndic of the Fitzwilliam Museum and Chairman of the Kurt Hahn Trust.

Mr Peter Davison

Current position:

Director of Corporate Affairs, Cambridge University Press.

Mr Davison has been with Cambridge University Press since 1984 in a variety of roles. Immediately before taking up his current position, he was based in Singapore for eight years, where he had responsibility for the Press’s business in Asia.

Professor John Gray

Current position:

John Gray is a Professor of Education and currently Chair of the Faculty Board of Education and Vice-Principal of Homerton College.

Professor Gray read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford before training for a research career at Harvard and Sussex. His first academic post was as a Research Fellow at Edinburgh University in the 1970s; he returned to Cambridge about fifteen years ago from a chair at Sheffield University. During the course of his career he has directed more than 60 externally-funded projects for a wide range of organisations including the research councils, central and local government. His work focuses on strategies for improving school systems with particular reference to matters of accountability, resource management, performance and participation. Recently, he led a research team which reviewed ways in which schools support student wellbeing. He was elected as a Fellow of the British Academy in 2000.

He has been extensively involved in activities outside Cambridge. He has served on many of the ESRC’s key committees and chaired a major review for them of educational research. He has served on the Board of the Teacher Training Agency and advised the English, Scottish and Northern Ireland governments on policy development. He has also served as a Special Adviser to the House of Commons Select Committee on Education.

Dr Gordon Johnson

Current position:

President of the Royal Asiatic Society.

Other appointments:

President of Wolfson College (1993-2010); Provost of the Gates Cambridge Trust (2000-2010); Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge (2002-2010).

Dr Johnson is an historian who has written about India and Cambridge. He edited Modern Asian Studies for nearly forty years, and is the General Editor of the New Cambridge History of India. He served for thirty years as a Syndic of Cambridge University Press and was its Chairman from 1993 to 2009.

Mrs Ann Puntis

Current position:

Chief Executive of University of Cambridge International Examinations

Ann Puntis was appointed Chief Executive of University of Cambridge International Examinations in November 2005.

Ann has extensive experience in education and assessment. She obtained First Class Honours at Cardiff University and proceeded to research at the University of Oxford. She also obtained a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the University of Cambridge and subsequently obtained an MBA.

She has worked as a teacher in secondary education, as a Principal and as a policy-maker in national education.

Ann joined CIE in 1997 and has worked in a number of areas developing assessments and services prior to becoming Chief Executive. She obtained her MBA in 2000.

Professor John Rallison

Current position:

Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education at the University of Cambridge.

Professor Rallison is a long-standing member of the Department of Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics having been both a research student and a lecturer in the Department; he is now Professor of Fluid Dynamics. He has been a Fellow of Trinity College since 1976, and has acted as Director of Studies for students from both Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and was Senior Tutor of Trinity College from 1988 to 1991 and from 2007 to 2008.

Professor Megan Vaughan

Current position:

Smuts Professor of Commonwealth History, Faculty of History, University of Cambridge, Director of the Centre of African Studies and President of the African Studies Association of the UK.

Professor Vaughan studied African history at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and taught for some years in the University of Malawi and at the University of Oxford before taking up her post in Cambridge.

Professor Sir Mark Welland FRS FREng FInstP FNASI

Current position:

Mark Welland is currently on secondment to the Ministry of Defence as Chief Scientific Adviser, where amongst his duties he directs the science and technology programme.
During his secondment he remains Professor of Nanotechnology at the University of Cambridge.

Mark’s research career is Nanoscience and Nanotechnology commenced with IBM where he was a member of the team that developed the first scanning tunnelling microscopes, a move to Cambridge in 1985 and the set up of the first tunnelling microscopy group in the UK and in 1991 the Nanoscience research group; latterly he established a purpose built facility at the University of Cambridge, the Nanoscience Centre, which undertakes a variety of nano-related research programmes of an interdisciplinary nature.

In 2002 Professor Welland was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Sciences, India and Honorary Member of the Materials Research Society of India (MRSI) and Foreign Member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters.

Sir Gregory Winter

Current position:

Member of the Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology, having co-founded the MRC Centre for Protein Engineering.

Sir Gregory is a molecular biologist and has developed widely-used technologies for making antibody and peptide drugs. He was a Founder and Director of Cambridge Antibody Technology, one of the early commercial biotech companies involved in antibody engineering. In 2000 he co-founded Domantis to pioneer the use of domain antibodies, and acted as Director and Chairman of the Science Advisory Board.

Sir Gregory, who is a Fellow of Trinity College, has received numerous international prizes and awards, and in 2004 was knighted for services to science. In 2011 he was awarded a Royal Medal by the Royal Society.

The Queen has approved that Sir Gregory be appointed Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, in succession to Lord Rees of Ludlow who retires from the post on 30 June 2012.
